History of Threads
Threads was started in 2013. This was started by LWML and Theresa Wehmeyer. It was an afghan project to donate to special people. People made 7x9 inch crochet or knitted blocks and left them in the quilters room. These were set together to make afghans. The first year, 2013, we had enough blocks to make two 7x7 block afghans and four 4x5 baby afghans.
We have three sizes of afghans we make, 7x7 blocks, 5x5 blocks, and 4x5 blocks, these are sewn together. We started making wedding afghans in 2016. Financial support for these came from LWML. We have also made baby afghans for new parents.
We have delivered 151 afghans from 2013-2019. We have delivered 17 wedding afghans so far. The people involved are numerous. Some known and some anonymous. The unknown people donate yarn blocks, yarn, and even finished afghans. We have a wide group of people who help; senior citizens, middle aged, school age and both men and women.
Our afghans go to people we hear about who need some extra love. It may be an illness, or death in the family, or someone who has done for others all of their life. They can be church family, people from the community, or friends of members. We also try to support our church groups, like the Alaska Mission Team and the Country Kitchen at the Turkey Dinner.
